Log+Key

Key safe vs. software

A safe locks keys away. We show who had them.

Key safes provide physical protection — but they don't document who last used which key. Log+Key complements (or replaces) the safe with a digital overview.

How Log+Key works

What a safe doesn't do

Secure keys — but who had them last?

The key safe has grown over decades because it solves a concrete problem: keys are locked away, not everyone can reach them. What it doesn't do is documentation.

Who took the key out last, when they brought it back, whether they passed it on to someone else — all of that happens outside the safe. In practice that means: a handwritten key logbook, an Excel list, or nothing at all.

With Log+Key, every key movement is recorded digitally — on a smartphone, a tablet or a wall terminal right next to the safe.

Safe + software

The two are no contradiction.

Many of our customers keep their existing key safe — and add Log+Key on top. Common providers such as SimonsVoss can be connected via the Wiegand integration, so that safe collections are documented automatically in the software.

The result: physical security stays in place, with documentation and an overview added on top. Whether you want a safe, software or both is up to your setup — the software on its own requires no hardware.

What the software adds

Four things the safe can't do

  • Who has the key?

A live overview instead of opening the safe door and counting. On any smartphone, tablet or the wall terminal.

  • Complete history.

Every collection, every return, every handover — with a timestamp and no handwritten key logbook.

  • Confirm with a signature.

Sign off key handovers to contractors, tenants and externals digitally — straight from the tablet or smartphone.

  • Key safe integration.

Connect existing safes and locking systems via the Wiegand integration — on top of the pure software solution.

Frequently asked questions

Safe, software or both — the key answers

  • With Log+Key, do we no longer need a key safe?

The two systems solve different problems. A safe secures keys physically — important protection that we have no intention of replacing. Software like Log+Key documents key movements: who had the key last, when it was returned, who signed for it. Many of our customers use both in parallel — the safe locks the keys away physically, Log+Key delivers the overview.

  • Can we connect Log+Key to an existing key safe?

Yes. Common key safe and locking system providers (e.g. SimonsVoss) can be connected via the Wiegand integration. The integration depends on the specific safe model — get in touch and we'll confirm in advance whether your setup is supported. Request a consultation.

  • What does Log+Key cost compared with an electronic key safe?

An electronic key safe costs anywhere from €500 to several thousand euros to buy — plus maintenance. Log+Key starts at €0 (free forever for up to 10 keys), and from €39 / month for up to 100 keys above that. For setups with your own hardware or a key safe connection, we'll put together a custom quote. All pricing at a glance. If you're still undecided which type of solution suits you: three approaches compared — safe, smart lock or software.

  • We hand keys to contractors and tenants — is a safe enough for that?

For externals, a safe on its own quickly becomes the weak point: as soon as you share the code, everyone knows it. With Log+Key you document every handover to externals, including a signature — the key has a clear owner, a return date can be recorded, and the handover is verifiable.

  • We already keep a key logbook today — why add software on top?

A handwritten key logbook works as long as the team is small and stable. As soon as shifts change, new staff join or several locations come together, keeping it up to date becomes a burden — and a lost book is almost impossible to reconstruct. Log+Key replaces the key logbook with a digital, searchable history and gives every member of staff a live overview on their smartphone.

  • Is the software solution less secure than a safe?

Security has two dimensions: physical (can someone steal the key?) and organisational (do we know who had it last?). A safe addresses only the first; Log+Key addresses the second — and that one is decisive for GDPR-compliant documentation. Hosting runs GDPR-compliant in Germany. More on security.
